First, consider having your denture adjusted by a prosthodontist to provide you with the best fit possible. A prosthodontist is a dental specialist with three years of training beyond dental school focused on denture care and maintenance. If the denture fit remains inadequate, you may want to consider dental implants. Dental implants are titanium screws placed into the jaw bone, with attachments that extend into the mouth to hold your denture in place. To find a prosthodontist near you visit www.gotoapro.org.

Question:  I had new dentures made and the teeth in them are really sharp is that how they are supposed to be. they actually cut into my lip

You should discuss your concerns with the dentist. The laboratory follows the dentist’s instructions; so, the first step is talking to the dentist. You may consider seeking the care of a prosthodontist, who is a dental specialist with three years of additional education after dental school, and who is trained to serve patients with a combination of needs including dentures. Denture and dental implant fees vary based on several factors such as difficulty and the condition of your bone and gums. The best way to determine fees for service is to visit with your dentist or prosthodontist and discuss the care you may need. You may also contact your state or local dental society to find out if the organization has any resources for the public related to the cost of dental services. You may want to seek the care of a prosthodontist, a dentist with three years of training beyond dental school who specializes in the care and maintenance of dentures. Question:  my denture clicks into 3 implants on top- I am told it will have to be tightened every few months - is this normal or a way for the dentist to get extra revenue? Thanks

When you make dentures that attach to implants, there is always some type of mechanical device that creates the hold between the denture and implants. All mechanical devices wear and need adjustment and replacement periodically. There is no absolute rule as to how often they need to be adjusted or replaced but it will happen. Some people go for longer times than others before adjustments or replacement are needed and it also depends on the type of function (such as biting and chewing) that you apply to your denture. Your dentist is just letting you know that adjustment will be needed and that cannot be avoided with mechanical attachments. Adjustments are normal.

Question:  I have to make a decision for implants (2) or dentures. Implants are very expensive for me and I am 72 years old. The question I have at this time, please, how do wireframework dentures work, how much are those compared to regular dentures, are they comfortable to live with and easy to handle? The 2 missing teeth are at the lower right and are next to each other. Implants for 2 are close to $7500.00. I would appreciate your expert advise. Thank you very much. Christel Martin

I cannot tell for sure from your description exactly what you mean by wireframework dentures but I think it means a partial denture that attaches to your remaining teeth with wire clasps. While this is an appropriate treatment, most patients would prefer to have implants because they act more like your own teeth and they are not removable. Implants are more expensive but they are often more comfortable and your satisfaction may be better. You might want to get the advice of a prosthodontist, a dental specialist with three years of training beyond dental school focused on denture care and maintenance. Question:  I need to get upper dentures. I still have eitght teeth in the front on the bottom. My dentist says they will only last a few more years. Should I go ahead and get both upper and lower dentures at the same time. Are there some brands of dentures that are better than others. I have heard of Comfident Dentures, they sound like they would be much better than the ones I am used to hearing about. Do you know about them. Jeannia

Often dentures seem like a simple solution to a number of dental problems, but it is a life-changing decision to live without natural teeth. It is a decision that deserves a lot of thought, requires information from dental professionals and a complete understanding of the limitations of dentures. The best starting point to see if dentures are an option for you is to see your dentist or a prosthodontist, who is a specialist with an additional three years of training after dental school. Prosthodontists focus on the restoration and replacement of teeth, including dentures for even the most complex cases. A prosthodontist will determine if another option is better suited for your particular situation or if you would benefit from dental implants to secure your dentures.
