im getting dentures for the first time and have some questions can anyone help me?

i am 36 years old and had dentures for a year now i hated going to the dentist i think more than anybody which is why i needed dentures i felt terrified going in and coming out. i went to aspen dental they were really nice made me feel more comfortable about the whole thing, they recomended doing the top and bottom at the same time so i had it done, i couldnt afford to be put to sleep for it so i just had novacane and had all teeth. i wanted to be put to sleep for it but it wasnt as bad as i thought it would be thankfully wont have to go through again it was only one time i had to through it so glad i got it all done at once cause it would have been hard for me to go back to do it again. i got the dentures that day, it hurt really bad but the pain killers worked fine i was a smoker at the time and couldnt smoke for three days which made it a little worse. i ate mostly soup, oatmeal, scrambled eggs for a couple weeks the gradually started eating more things. i dont regret getting it done i am so glad no more abscesses no more pain i could eat things i havent been able to eat or had a hard time eating since i was like 13. it was hard at first but it does get easier.

Elaine, I've had dentures now for 21 days.  I agree with the earlier post, immediate dentures are best.  I had to wait 4 days to get back to the dentist after having 20 teeth pulled in 1 sitting.  I had pain pills which helped a bit, but when I left the dentist after my visit, the pain was all but gone!  You will experience periodic pain for about the first 4-6 weeks, until the swelling is totally gone.  When that happens, go see the dentist, he will adjust the dentures to alleviate the pain.  After the swelling is down, the dentures will feel loose, but when you are healed & ready, he'll line them & they will fit better (My re-line is 1 week from today.)  This is a life changing decision, so please seek as much advise from professionals as possible.  And be prepared to be patient.  It is a long process and it'll feel like the days are dragging.  Much luck to both of us and much thanks to the posters on this web site.  They were life saving!

Getting dentures put in right after the extractions has many benefits. The denture acts as a pressure bandage to help control bleeding plus leaving the office with teeth as opposed to toothless does wonders for your body image and self esteem. There is going to be some pain and discomfort in the early days but if you follow the dentists directions, you should be able to tolerate it. If the pain is extreme- go back to the dentist. Use ice packs for the first day or so to help with pain and swelling.

Be sure to get as much information up front as you can, get your plan in writing including all costs associated with getting dentures. Try to maintain a positve outlook. It is going to be hard at first but you are not the first nor will you be the last to go through this. There are plenty of people out there that can help- just ask.
