Posted: March 4, 2011 7:42 pm

I am a 35 year old female and I just got upper and lower partials. My problem is I have been gagging and I have to take my upper partial. Will it get any better and is there any one with any tips to help me with the gagging. Thanks

For what it is worth, I have had a full upper and a lower partial, which hooks onto the only two teeth in my mouth that were salvageable after lots of chemotherapy, put in less than a week ago. I have kept a glass of milk or soft drink beside me which I sip on throughout the day. This has been my practice throughout the chemotherapy and helps with gagging, nausea etc. While I was told not to drink carbonated drinks for a few weeks, my pain from the surgery, and other possible side effects has been greatly reduced. Learning to chew and to talk clearly are my biggest hurtle at this point. Getting a good sealant and using a good mouthwash has been a tremendous help also. The taste of the dentures and adhesive the dentist gave me were enough to gag me. Warm salty water between meals also helped reduce some of the excess saliva. Plus the old fashion trick of getting my mind off the dentures and onto something else helps too.

I have to say that I feel the exact same way about my new upper denture. I let my dentist talk me into takng out all of my top troubed teeth and getting a top denture because my health would improve as well as having a great smile. Well, guess what??? I am hating the dentures, they make me

GAG so bad that i have to keep taking them out. So how am I suppose to get used to them??

I keep trying to tell my dentist about the problems I'm having and he won't listen and tells me to get used to it that he cant cut the back or saw down the top of the palete because it will break...Yeah rite !!! Also, they don't look right. They r too wide and fat !!! They r also different shapes of teeth and go sideways. It's crazy. This sucks and I'm going for another opinion very soon..

It seems we got dentures at same time. I have complete uppers and lowers. Gagging was and sometimes still is a big issue. The first thing that really helped is the dentist trimmed the back of upper denture and this helped alot. As strange as this may seem i found sucking on sour candy helped and i also used lemon juice, I felt like to much saliva was abig issue as well.Grapefruit juice became my best friend as well.  Keeping upper extremely secure seems to be a big key as well. When it starts to loosen i get that feeling again. My biggest issue is i can't get the gel out of my mouth and this leads to gagging, I have not found a answer for that yet that works well. Good luck i hope this helps.

I had the same problem and since I had mine dentures made at the densitry school, I had some of the top notch doctors looking at my problem.  They found that the top was too thick against the palete and once they thinned it down, the problem went away.  I do find that now with the seasons changing, my sinuses are pressured with the full plate which has the same effect.

I hope this helps

When I first got my dentures I had lots of problems.  I was afraid to eat as my mouth was full of plastic.  I was unable to speak clearly.  With time this all went away.  GIVE YOURSELF TIME. wear them for short periods of time and slowly increase. YOu'll get used to them over time!
