Looking for support with new dentures

Posted: March 10, 2011 1:31 pm

Hi out there.  I just recently got a full upper denture and have been having problems.  I have been researching, reading blogs and boards, and doing my best to cope with the initial healing and an improperly fitting immediate denture.  My dentist has not been sympathetic or understanding and basically tells me I just have to deal with it.  The sides of my denture were made as though my mold was made with cotton rolls placed between my teeth and cheeks.  This is causing my cheeks to be sore, my face to look unnatural, and pain.  I shared this with my dentist just yesterday and he told me he was putting soft reline material in there but wasn't going to do anything else.  The soft reline material did not alleviate the too wide sides at the back and this causes my face, muscles, and cheeks  to have soreness and pain.  He refuses to send them back to the lab to be remade.  Also, the teeth and gums do not look realistic, as the "gums" look gray when they are in my mouth and not pink like they should when they are out.  Does anyone know anything about that?   Also, because of the bulging sides, when I smile you can also see those unnatural bulging sides at the back of my mouth and even my little girl said that it did not look natural.  I realize that I am only two weeks into this, but I am very disappointed with my denture and my dentist.  I do not have dental insurance and my family helped me to get these which cost 800.00 just for the immediate denture.

I have also struggled with the gagging problem and eating food of any kind with this denture in is a joke.  I get choked because I have a tiny mouth and with this big thing on the roof of my mouth taking up so much space, I have little room to swallow.  Arrgg....

I would really like to find some new online friends who are going through the same or similiar situation.  Support is always helpful and makes a big difference.

Looking forward to discussing!

Hi there and thank you for responding to my post.  My dentist refuses to do anything and when he does, he just makes more problems for me.  He really needs to send them back to the lab, but won't.  Because of it, I have had to spend my own money to see a prosthodontist who confirmed to me that my upper denture is completely made wrong!!!  Grrr.....so, I am spending almost another 1000.00 to have this prosthodontist make me a new one and will have me do as many wax try-ins as it takes to get the fit correct.  I even get to choose my teeth and color and these are just my temps!  I get to do the first wax try-in on April 18th and I can hardly wait.  I've been in so much pain from this first upper one that is made wrong.  I have jaw pain, ear pain, neck pain, and facial pain after putting them in for 10 minutes.  I only get relief when they are out.  As far as the gagging thing, I told him that I have researched and found that he could shorten the back flanges and remove some of the rear palate and he refuses because he said I would lose suction.  My thought is that I don't care if I had to use adhesive the rest of my life....I am not about to gag every day for the rest of my life.  I look forward to the day I can afford mini-implants for my uppers and then it is bye bye upper palate!  lol

Yes, I am up for helping each other get through this!  Unless one has dentures, they have no idea what we go through and support is vital!

Looking forward to talking more with you!

Howdy, I am three weeks in. I had that same gagging problem the first week in. You should have the dentist not only thin the area below your soft palate but also shorten that area going towards the teeth. (going back to front). That is what my dentist did and MAN did that make a difference. No gagging, could swallow my pain pills without having to take out my tops. Quite a difference. Maybe we could help each other get through this. On a side note, I know that you have probably spent alot of money and don't really want to spend anymore money with some other dentist but if your dentist is being obtuse, my advise is to seek a consultation with another dentist (I go to Afdent) its FREE!. I know of a few people who have done this and they adjusted their problems for free during that consultation. One time only mind you, but kind of hard to swallow that tasty oatmeal and mashed potatoes if you can't swallow. good  luck  buckyboy

It sounds like the denture is too thick on the sides. Many times immediate dentures are made a bit thicker to accomodate the adjustments that need to be made. It is not very professional of your dentist not to listen to your concerns. I think the denture needs to be adjusted more than just putting a liner in it. My suggestion is to write down all of your concerns and observations and go in to the office with a list. Try not to get too emotional when discussing them. Do you have a spouse, family member or trusted friend that could go along with you and help explain things to the dentist. The adjustments should not be hard to make. Gagging is common with new first time denture wearers but it should be addressed. I hope this helps. B
