My Experience Seems Slightly Different

Posted: June 16, 2011 9:18 am

New to the site and thrilled to see a message board for people like myself, adjusting to dentures. However, my experience seems a bit different than most, I've read. I had my teeth extracted in December and had a wait of 5½ months before I got my dentures. My Dentist/oral surgeon suggested waiting for 6-8 weeks, before even having impressions done. A few issues with the look of the dentures lengthened my wait, a bit. My Dentist was absolutely wonderful, wanting the best fit and look, so I'm happy.

I've gone back for three adjustments, but feel this last set of adjustments may have taken care of all my issues. The pressure points/sore spots are healing, but I still feel like I have way too many teeth in my mouth and chewing is still not the most natural feeling. With my bottoms, I have no choice but to use adhesive, but finding the correct amount has been a struggle. I also notice that at times,my uppers want to follow my lowers, so if the lowers are loose, the uppers will drop off, too. As a result, I do use adhesive for both uppers and lowers, but the hold is much longer lasting on the uppers.

I guess my one question, like so many, here, will there be a time when eating seems normal...where I don't feel like my mouth is so full of teeth that I can relax and enjoy the ability to actually bite through food?

I'm no longer able to work, due to health issues, so that's why I was able to have the extractions done and let my mouth heal, before the process of being fitted and adjusting to dentures, immediately. I think waiting was best for me, but after almost 6 months without teeth, it's been a struggle to adjust to dentures. I wasn't able to eat with them in at all for the first week, almost two. Once the Dentist OK'd me for using adhesive, things began to improve, but as mentioned, I'm finding it difficult to find the right amount to really 'stick' my lowers.

Nice to see I'm not alone in my worries and concerns!

You had to go a long time with no teeth, nothing in your mouth so the dentures are going to feel even larger. Your tongue has also spread out because it had nothing to conflict with during the toothless time. Learning to wear and use dentures is a process that takes time. The normalcy of dentures will come with experience. Hopefully over time you may learn to wear your dentures without adhesive, it is not the case for everyone but for some it can be done. As far as finding the right amount of a product to use is trial and error. You may also have to test drive several different products before you find the one that works best for you. Also keep in mind that more adhesive is not always the right answer- too much can be worse than not enough. Use it sparingly. When I use adhesive I prefer the powders as the clean up at the end of the day is so much easier. Also it is harder to use too much. Good luck and hang in there, it does get better.
