I look different

Hi everyone. I'm Kelly. I'm forty years old and just got dentures(full upper and lower) on Wednesday, 7/27. I'm not freaking out too bad, which surprises me, cuz I'm usually very vain about the way I look. First of all, I look like I have a mouth piece for boxing in my mouth. Is there any way this can be corrected? It looks rediculous! Second, is the pain. OMG! The top ones, I'm tolerating, but it hurts pretty bad. The bottom ones, I can't even wear them. The pain is horrific, they don't stay in place, and lastly, they feel and look 2x too big for my mouth. I can't even close my mouth all the way when the bottoms are in.  I keep telling myself that everything will be better, but to hear others had the same issues and things really do get better would definitley help.

Thank you, Kelly

Hi Kelly,  I'm not fully qualified to reply, since I have just received partials, but for the pain aspect--well-fitting dentures should not hurt (after the healing is complete), aside from a few sore spots which can be remedied by adjustments to the appliances.  I agree with the other posts, though, that a lot of the ill fit and pain could be due to swelling, dry sockets, etc.  Any cosmetic problems should be able to be corrected once you are fully healed, if not before.  They should feel comfortable and look natural if done by a good dentist and lab.  Best of luck to you, and I'll be joining your club (full dentures) as soon as I can find a way to pay for them!

It sounds like you got immediate dentures and since they were fitted before your natural teeth were removed there are a lot of issues with the fit- go back to the dentist and tell them all the things that you are not happy with. Some things can be corrected easily and others take more time and may have to wait for your dentures to be replaced in the future. The mouth piece look should be correctable and may also be due to swelling. Keep going back to the dentist until your issues are resolved- hang in there and take it a day at a time.

Hi Kelly, I am 3 weeks with my full upper & lower dentures. I had my dentist duplicate my smile, which helped greatly with the transistion. When are you due back to see the dentist? I saw mine the day after the extractions. Stayed on 800 mg motrin, and only drank liquids. Once the stitches were out, I started using adhesive, which helps with keeping them in place. See your dentist as soon as you can, to make sure your gums are ok. No dry sockets, bone fragments, etc. It will get better, I promise!!
