Ins and Outs

Posted: August 9, 2011 2:25 am

I am 35 and considering getting dentures.  I have a few questions and frankly, no one to turn to.

1. What was the final deciding factor for you?

2. Do you have implant supported dentures?  I am looking at those and would like opinions on them.

3. What was your recovery pain & timeframe like?

As I sit and write this, I am in so much pain that I would love to do away with.  It's in my face, my ear, my head.  It comes and goes.  And I struggle with doing something so permanent, but I look in the mirror and just think yuck!  They hurt, they're ugly, and IF they can be fixed, it will take more than I'm willing to do.  I just struggle with that final push.

Thanks so much,

Jennifer

What you need to ask yourself is the questions. What will the denture affect in my life? Will it bother you to have dentures? Will you feel at ease with the way you look after your face changes and major bone loss will change your appearance? Hope for eating a steak is very slim if you don't have implants. I wish I had not chose the upper denture. Lots of things to know before getting them so ask. I am going to tell you my year of change with the upper denture has not been a good one at all. Somethings to think of is your feelings on no teeth when sleeping and how you feel when your kissing your husband? If you can keep your teeth do so and just get them fixed. Go without want's and just get what you need to but pay to have your teeth fixed. You will be thankfull you did.

I was around 30 when I first got dentures. both upper and lower! I was in so much pain from abcesses and decay, not that I didn't take care of my teeth. I did. I had weak enamel. Any way getting my teeth pulled and getting dentures was the best thing I could've done for myself! I just picked up my new pair today. my old ones broke. I don't have implanted dentures. So I can't help you there. Having been through what you're going through i would say do it. My self esteem and confidence has gone way up. i look good, I can eat anything I want and no one knows I'm wearing dentures!

I am 30 years old and just got my upper denture september 14th. I know how you feel. I went thru the same thing. Every time you turn around your teeth are killing you and you just want the pain to stop. My problem was my teeth would break off at the gum line. Having all your teeth pulled and getting dentures isn't an easy thing to do. If I were you I would try and get my real teeth fixed if possible. I'm not saying you shouldn't get dentures, I'm just saying if possible the real thing is always better. If you decide to get dentures they do take time to get use to them. I haven't had mine long enough to be comfortable with them yet, so I can't speak about the long term. I know when you are our age you have alot more worries than older people. Good luck in which ever way you choose.

1. I cannot tell what the final deciding factor was, something just snapped and I jumped in. I had cancelled with two other dentists. I just had to end the nightmare.   2. I just had an upper, I am going to repair my bottom teeth. My dentist said even with very small bone ridges her thought he could get a good fit in the upper and I would be fine with adhesives and I have been. 3.  I took a week off work, just because I had sick time to burn. I could have gone back to work on day 3-4 but why rush it. The pain was never as bad as I expected it to be. the worst was taking them in and out .  The first week is just a buggar, but I improved rapidly after that.  I know a lot of people really struggle, but check this webstite. Lots of folks are really doing well with thier denture. I would do it over again in a heartbeat. I am 10 weeks out 100% pain free and looking like myself. Smiling at everyone.  The only thing I cannot eat is an apple. Corn on the cob, steak, popcorn, licorice, carmel all great. People worry about what they can eat, well I could not eat ALOT of things with my bad teeth. This is a major improvement.  My dentist had all 13 of my  teeth out and my denture in in less than an hour.  I did take something to help me relax that morning and something for pain for 3 days.  I went novocaine only and I was back home in bed with the remote before I knew it. Find a dentist you really trust, and JUMP IN.  Imagine a day that your mouth does not hurt. awesome.

I am 36 and had 12 teeth taken out in Dec. of 2010, then the other 12 taken out March 2011 and dentures put in. I had a lot of bone and gum lose. I have been miserable, they cannot get a good fit because of the lose, and even adhesive won't keep them in totally. I am dependant on adhesive everyday all day and usually my bottom teeth come unglued if I try and eat. I basically can't eat at all. I have lost a lot of weight and really only eat if I don't have them in (you know like really soft mushy stuff).  Now I am looking at 9 more months of work and $25,000 to get 8 dental implant anchors. I have been severly depressed and wish I could turn back time. I actually had one dentist before all of this tell me he could fix my teeth they would just still be crocked.

I was in so much pain with my real teeth and wanted a quick fix and now I am totally paying for my stupid decision. If I had it to do over I would've went with the first dentist opinion and kept my teeth and just got them fixed. REALLY make sure you are ready to make your decision and what happens afterwords. Good luck
