i just had my teeth removed 09-19-11. i dont have much problem with the bottoms other then needing some minor adjustment gums sore. my top dentures make me gag i cant keep them in longer then 10 seconds i dont know what to do my dentist said he could remove the roof portion but then i wouldnt have any suction i would have to use polygrip to rely on keepping them in place. so what do you think.

Hang in there! It's not the most pleasant thing, that's for sure, but maybe try some deep breathing and try not putting your tongue on the roof of your mouth where the denture is now "residing" Breath with your mouth open if that helps. After awhile, your brain will adjust to having a new thing in your mouth.

It's an adjustment but talk to yourself about it! Try and be confident about it. Look in the mirror and smile!! Talk to yourself in the mirror, I know it sounds silly but I can tell you honestly that after a few months it will get easier. After some time, you'll actually forget you have different teeth.

Same issue, but worked thru it before I left his office and no problems since, just relax and it will get better.

i just had my teeth removed on 9/14. when my dentist was making the impressions, i also had a serious gag reflex. she made a hole in the top of the impression plate. she also had the "denture maker" to make a hole in my actual plate. i'm still not able to chew but in putting food in my mouth, i notice the food seems to go straight to the whole in my top plate and i have to work it out with my tongue! i really think it's a major adjustment period. when i get ready for work, i need an extra ten minutes for putting in my teeth. the first few days, i gagged every time. but now i can put them in without gagging. if you can suffer through it, i recommend not having the hole put in your top plate. good luck to you!

I have a bad gag reflex too. I got upper dentures almost 12 years ago. You just need time to adjust to the feel of the upper plate. I do not recommend the dentist removing part of the plate because suction is so important. I suggest keeping the plate in. I know you will gag but if you keep them in and work through it, you will get used to it. It is always difficult the first few days because it is so different. Keep them in and if you gag, you gag. Just keep working at it. I worked through it and by the end of the first week, I no longer gagged when I put them in. You can do it, just be patient.
