NIGHTMARE!!!

Posted: November 12, 2011 5:19 am

Brief history of my nightmare: I am a 59 year old woman, retired and all teeth were pulled July 28, 2011, immediates were not done correctly so fell out and unable to put back in; due to myriad of issues which included dentures not being done correctly due to bad denture tech.  After dealing with this for 3 months, they refunded my money.  Can I tell you how unattractive one feels going without teeth for over 3 months????   I found another dentist who uses a better tech and got my dentures this week.  Have had some adjustments done to align my bite and I use an adhesive powder to secure the dentures.  Don't want a reline as I had that done on my previous set from the original dentist and it made the palate WAY too thick.  Even with them adjusting by thinning out the palate, it was just too much in my mouth for me to even talk.  Must say that the adhesive powder is far and above better than the gooey pastes which I have used as well.  Powder holds great and not much residue left in mouth.  I understand that the bottoms will be difficult to keep from popping out even with adhesive and I will have to somehow use my muscles as well as tongue to hold them in.  Back to my nightmare, have been gumming soft foods for all this time and my gums, I feel, have healed to where I should be able to eat some foods with more texture with my dentures in now.  Tried to eat a toasted ham and cheese sandwich yesterday but when I would chew, or make a sad attempt at doing so, using my back teeth, I can't say I had pain but it was SO UNCOMFORTABLE due to the pressure exerted on my gums.  Is this something that is normal and will go away with time and experience??  Like so many on this board, I just don't feel like eating with them in but I so want to get to the point where I can go out to eat with my husband.  Also, how embarrassing is it to eat something and not know that you have food stuck in your teeth!!!????  I ate some ravioli (again, SOFT FOOD) yesterday and thought I had felt around the dentures but when I looked in the mirror, food was stuck in between some of the front teeth.  At least I was at home and not in a restaurant.  I must say I don't feel that I will EVER feel comfortable wearing these or truly enjoy eating again.  The dentist told me because I went without dentures for so long, that it will be more difficult for me to adjust to wearing them.  Guess I'm just not a patient person!!  Thanks for listening and any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks to all for the suggestions.  I would like to expand a bit on what's happening with my situation.  This is the second dentist I have tried in order to get decent dentures.  I'm having to use Absolute Dental here in Las Vegas because I chose them originally from my dental plan's list.  Since the first set did not work out, that office refunded my money and suggested I try Affordable Dentures.  I have financed my surgery and dentures through Care Credit and unfortunately, Affordable Dentures does not take any financing plans.  I called around to some other places and could not find any place that would be able to do them for the same price as the financing was already set in place and I was unable to get additional funds.  So, it's back to a different location of Absolute Dentures.  I am going to try and go in today for another adjustment in my bite and see if that helps.  May have to do a soft reline as I had a soft reline done on previous set which made the palate too thick for me.  I'm thinking, okay it will remain pliable but it became just as hard as the plate.  If they can tell me that the palate will not thicken, just the gum area, then I will go with it.  Also, I told my dentist when I went back for my first adjustment that it feels like the front teeth on the uppers are protruding which causes me to be unable to press my lips together, such as when you put lipstick on.  Can't bring my tongue up on the front of the uppers as well.  He didn't think it was an issue.  After thinking about it and looking at the uppers, it looks like the tech put the teeth slightly in front on the gums instead of placing them along the gumline where your tooth would normally grow from.  It feels like I have bucked teeth.  I doubt that they will do anything about this because a new upper would have to be made.  As to the case of keeping them in, I use a powder adhesive which works fairly well until I eat something.  I don't care how glued in both plates are, shortly after trying to eat something soft, the lowers pop loose and the uppers begin to wiggle.  I also have used the creams which are AWFUL and they don't hold either.  I basically take them out after this happens, eat without them and wear them just for "show".  Needless to say, we don't go out to eat at all.  I know it is going to take time to adjust to them but I'm not sure if I will ever feel comfortable eating real food.  I'm hoping that if I can get the bite adusted correctly and get the fit adjusted as well, MAYBE I can begin to feel more comfortable with them.  I just feel like I have put my husband and I in a financial bind for something that will never work for me.  I had to finance $8,000 which most of that was for the surgery.  The dentures cost $1,300.  So that also leaves out getting the posts for snap in dentures.  It's way too costly.  I'm hoping to find a job working for the state of Nevada but it's difficult to go on interviews when you feel so self-conscious about your mouth and how you talk.  If I was able to get work, then maybe I could afford the posts for snap ins down the road.  I find myself getting extremely depressed over this huge mistake I have made.  Again, thanks for listening.

I don't mean to be harsh but it seems to me that you need better fitting dentures from a better dentist/prostodontist.  You should not be so miserable for so long.  Look on this message board and see how many of us are not.

I have been an upper denture wearer since July 11, 2011 (but have a combination of natural and implant restored teeth on the bottom).  I can assure you that, with time, it will get better.  And, yes, unfortunately, learning to eat with a denture requires a lot of patience and practice.  It also requires a positive attitude.  You will be surprised how well you do in a few months if you keep working at it.  You need to allow time for the "new you" to develop and take over.

My suggestions/comments are: (1) make sure, by returning to your dentist and making a pest of yourself, that your dentures fit as well as possible; (2) reconsider having a soft reline because it really does make things more comfortable and stable; (3) once you become comfortable eating at home, you will naturally progress to eating out; (4) you will get better at eating without getting food stuck but, in the meantime, eat smaller bites (less to get stuck) with your back teeth (whatever gets stuck will be less visible) and swish a little water from your water glass; and (5) some days are/will be better than others.

I never thought I would be eating as well as I am eating now!  Last night, I devoured crusty french bread in a restaurant without any problems.  I haven't tried corn on the cob or biting into anything really hard (because my teeth are beautiful and I do not want to break them and don't mind breaking off a piece of the hard stuff and putting it in my mouth).  The only thing I don't enjoy anymore and have trouble eating is lettuce and other salad type stuff unless it is chopped.  A small price to pay.

Hang in there and let us know how you do.
