Day 5-miserable-venting and questions...

Posted: December 3, 2011 12:05 am

Hi Folks. UGH. THIS IS AWFUL. I had 14 teeth extracted 5 days ago 6 on the bottom 8 on the top and already had some pulled over the years. This did leave me with enough natural teeth for partials on both. I went to Affordable Dentures in Maryland and although they got the job done, if you go there, do NOT count on any hand holding or any extra chatting. They move you on through like cattle going to slaughter. I will say the front desk woman was very nice and it was clean. So I wont go much into the visit except to say it was barbaric and it would have been nice if they would allow you an extra 30 minutes in the chair afterwards so you could wrap your freaking brain about what you have just put yourself through...atleast I wont have to ever endure THAT again... Ok so. Day 5. Man my mouth hurts. Is that normal after 5 days? Even my good teeth have pain. The stitches are gone, I am not bleeding but oh so tender, my lips are dry cracked and burning, the good teeth are super sensitive to touch and temps... I can no longer wear the bottom because of a sore where it rubs, the top fits great and I hardly take them out cept to clean. I still have swelling, when will that end??? I am takin 1,600 MGs of Ibuprofin every 4 hours and a half a percocet about every 6 hours. plus keeping ice on it , I cant sleep and altho all that takes the edge off I am still in in pain and by the end of the 4 hours I am in agony. I am pretty certain it isnt a dry socket, i have had that before, this just feels like my face has been punched in, ripped off and put in a grinder. I go back to the dentist on the 9th and when I called they just said to keep ice on it and take the ibuprofin/percocet....does it take everyone this long to "recover"??? Ugh........

2. Day 5-miserable-venting and questions... by robinson

My deepest sympathy. I am on day 7 of a full extraction.  I still hurts but it is subsiding. Right now it mostly hurts when I try to bear down on my teeth. You know like when you chew. So I am taking it slow.

It wasn't the pain that got on my nerves during the extraction ordeal. I was so hopped up with novacaine that I didn't feel a thing. It was the crunching noises.  What is it about dentists and all those wierd disturbing noises that they can produce?

I also went to AffordableDentures in Jacksonville. I read their handouts and then went online to get more in depth information. Their idea of "soft foods" was grits. Now I like grits but COME ON! This particular website has a lot of good stuff especially where foods are concerned. Just forget broths, they are totally unsatisfying. Cream of Chicken is great.

I too am having more trouble with the lowers.  According to all that I have uncovered around the internet, this is not unusual. Use ice pack for the swelling. The Technician at Affordabe recommended Benzodent for the sore spots. I works great but you have to apply often as it wears out after about 4 hours. Did you have them adjust your denture when the sore developed? Our office here has regular daily adjustment hours set aside so you can just walk in.

I know its bad. Not just the dentures but how you are rethinking things. I like my vegetables crunchy!  What with the pain and the total inconveniece of dealing with dentures and the limitations that they bring about, it is not unusual to vent and be angry. I have been in assorted church choirs for the past three decades and this coming Saturday I will miss, for the first time, a performance of a Christmas concert. This has me so POed that I can't think straight.

But it will get better.

Totally feel your pain! I am at about 30 days with my full dentures but waited two months after the extractions to get them. I didn't have the swelling but was bruised and puffy & did have "phantom" tooth pain for a few weeks. I swear I could feel every tooth that was no longer there. Try rinsing with warm salt water several times a day. That really helped me ( plus the motrin & ice ). I had a lot of bone chips work their way out in my bottom jaw over the past month, so you will be sore if that is happening to you. Good luck!
