immediate denture?

Posted: December 13, 2011 11:05 pm

Got dentures directly after extractions and was told DO NOT take them out! They are killing me and I was wondering if all dentists say not to take them out or it its just mine!  I am only supposed to take them out to clean once every 3 days and then put them back immediatly! He also said even after I do get used to them I should sleep in them?  They hurt like crazy and I can't sleep but don't want them not to fit and want to do what the Dr. says. Just wondering if anyone has any tips or at least knows what I am going through!

They usually tell you to wait at least 24 hours before removing them for the first time and many want you to return to them to have them taken out the first time. The more you wear them during the early stages of adaptation the easier it will be over the long haul. Once your mouth settles down a bit it is personal choice whether to take them out at night or wear them but do rest your gums daily. Good luck

I got my dentures just over 4 wks.ago and was also told not to remove them for more than cleaning.  Apparently this is pretty common. I had top done on a monday and bottom on a wednesday;  really had no problems to speak of.  my mouth was a bit tender but that's about all i can say.  My dentist told me after some of the swelling goes down, and the stitches are out, that i could leave them out at night if i chose.  Seems like each dentist has his/her own theory on leaving in or taking out.  I am guessing you are using something for pain management?  It does get better....just takes some time.  i have had my share of rotten days too, trying to adjust to eating again.  best of luck!

I think the approach of your dentist is unusual and unorthodox.

The usual practice is (1) to sleep in an immediate denture the night following the extractions, (2) to remove an immediate denture periodically during the remainder of the days of the first week to rinse gums with salt water, and (3) sometimes, to sleep with an immediate denture for the first week (but not after that).  Also, in my case, although my immediate denture was uncomfortable immediately following my extractions, it was not painful.  On the basis of your pain, I think you need to return to your dentist.  Perhaps, your immediate denture requires adjustment.  If your dentist is not responsive, find another one.

Good luck.
