Questions about dentures.

Seeing my dentist soon as he is back in his office from shoulder replacement surgery. I am getting prepared he's gonna tell me that my only option is getting dentures cause a dentist on  just answer website said that the few remaining teeth didn't look like they could be restored cause of them looking infected. I know I can't go by what he says but I am just preparing myself.

The thought of upper dentures sounds good but my problem is, I don't have patience and I get stressed too easily. I am so afraid that I will never get used to them. I've read how people have to learn to eat and talk again, sore gums, they gag people, and all these cons just make me so nervous thinking about it.

What I try to process is how they feel, I can't imagine feeling something thick or something like a foreign object in my mouth. And something else, while eating, the denture covers your natural gums and the roof of your mouth. What is that like when eating? How can you even feel how to eat food? Or if you get food at the roof of the plate, I try to figure out how you will be able to taste anything. Remember this is only an upper denture.  I would greatly appreciate anyone who only has an upper denture and what it is really like and how quickly it takes to get adjusted and what to do to make it easier.

I have had a top denture for about a month now.   Here are a few answers for you.   Yes it does take a few days to get used to the feeling, however; i am used to the top now.  No it is not thick, not like you think.  It is a foreign object but it starts to feel natural.  Kind of like wearing contacts, you don't realize you have them on after a few days.  Learning to talk wasn't as bad as i expected it to be; however today i received my bottoms.  that is going to be the challenge for me.  I haven't had anything on the bottom for over 2 years, so it is all different for me.  Eat soft foods for awhile.  Yogurt, pudding, potatoes, soup.  It really does help. Take your time eating, in other countrys dinner is an affair.   The sore gums are taken care of pretty quick, at least my dr did.  The gag reflex, yes i did have that and thought that my top needed to be trimmed down, however, my dr said to give it a couple of days.  The reason that the top is long is to create a suction so that it stays put.  He was right.  I don't gag anymore and they are light, and as the swelling goes down your dr should be adjusting your plate.  Dr Tiu told me that it takes about 8 weeks for swelling to go down completely.  I am ready for my second re-line on top.   When i eat i can still taste,  you taste with your tongue not your roof.  You can still taste, and chew and eat and drink.   I haven't gotten any food between the plate and the roof of my mouth, so don't worry there.  It's kind of good, i don't burn the roof of my mouth on coffee any more.  The hardest challenge that i have found so far is eating soup out of a soup spoon.  I have to use a regular spoon.  I am glad that my husband nagged me long enough that i got this done.  It has been an experience but, i am happy that i went through it.
