First week

Posted: April 23, 2012 8:59 am

Has been 3 days am frustrated and feeling sick too.  I know it's going to be okay in time but how do you get over the hump?  I am afraid of loosing my job as 90% of my work is on a telephone.  Think the sick feeling is from swallowing so much siliva and blood, and feeling like I am going to gag on the simple stuff like water and jello.

Please try to calm down and think positive thoughts.  I know that sounds crazy but it really will help!  It could be the anxiety and fear (justified as they are) that are making you feel sick.  Time and patience are your best friends right now.  After the first week or so, you will start feeling much better.

I agree that you should speak with your dentist.  Although the excess saliva is a typical reaction to having something new in your mouth, you really shouldn't be experiencing much, if any, bleeding.  I also agree that you need to speak with your employer.  It is unrealistic to think that you don't need at least a few days to adjust before being able to work at full speed.

Try small sips of liquids that are slippery -- when I was at your stage, I absolutely loved milkshakes and smoothies that were blended on the thin side. They are easier to swallow and maneuver around your denture than water.

Try really small spoonfuls (like just the tip of the spoon) of foods that are soft and slippery -- when I was at your stage, I loved apple sauce and chocolate pudding.

Good luck (and let us know how you are doing).

I'm Karen, the Fixodent Community Manager.  I know this is a difficult time for you, so I understand why you're frustrated.  Talk to your employer about the challenges you're going through right now.  And be sure to let your dentist know you're feeling sick, and that you have the urge to gag.

Meanwhile, you've come to a great place for encouragement!  Try to think positive thoughts.  Take it one day at a time, and know that you'll be comfortable with your new teeth soon.  I'm sure your new smile is beautiful.  Be sure to post again soon and let us know how you're doing.

I know this is a big event in your life.  I hope this makes a difference!
