Gotta get 'em. What's the best way to go?

Posted: April 23, 2012 1:42 pm

I'm 57 years old, and due to bone loss, I have 11 teeth, all toward the front of my mouth. Most of them are either "hanging by a thread," or hurting like heck. I'm sick of it.

Can someone suggest what the best, most economical, most "sane" solution would be? There are places where I live (Albuquerque) which offer acrylic dentures for about $1000, plus $125 per tooth for extractions. Is acryilc ok? Is this a scam I will live to regret?

I'm also in rather bad financial shape, and frankly I'd rather just let them fall out and "gum it" than spend any money on dentures that are as obvious as a bad toupee', or look like something George Washington fashioned.

Thank you for any suggestions or advice.

Karen – thank you so much for the reply. It was very helpful and reassuring.

FYI, and possibly for future reference, the folks at the website you gave me, New Mexico Dental Association, do not provide any sorts of fee schedules for dentists, nor do they refer.

I'm still considering my options, and I'm finding the extractions, not the dentures, are the biggest financial issue. Can't seem to find a dentist who'll give any kind of break on their “per tooth” price, which I don't quite understand... but, whaddya gonna do? Lol – seems I'm not rich enough to get it done, nor poor enough to qualify for any of the “free clinic” sort of help.

Actually, I'm not all that far from Mexico, and it's a lot cheaper there than on this side of the border. Any opinion?

Either way, thank you again Karen.

Hello Ike,

I'm Karen, the Fixodent Community Manager.  I'm glad you decided to research options for your teeth.  You have nothing to worry about with acrylic dentures.  Dentures have been made of acrylic resin for decades.  This is an excellent material, and your dentures can be made to look very natural.

I know price is a big concern.  The cost of extractions and dentures can vary widely.  There are variations in cost due to location, and specialists often charge more than general dentists.  You'll also find different prices for economy dentures, mid-range dentures and premium dentures, but keep in mind that economy dentures may not fit well.  You may want to contact your state dental society to see if they have a listing of local dental fees.  The website for the New Mexico Dental Association is www.nmdental.org.

I hope this helps!

^Karen
