Aftertaste & Gooey Residue

After being embarrased by the appearance of my teeth, I took the leap and had 10 uppers extracted and an immediate denture just one month ago. The first few days were a bit rough but it was worth it! Since the swelling has gone down, I'm finding that I'm more confident if I use the Fixodent Food Seal. It works great and seems quite powerful in the hold.

My problem is a bit crazy but hopefully I'm not the only one....by early afternoon, I start to notice an "aftertaste" that lingers throughout the day and evening until I remove the denture. Any ideas on what may be the cause? I believe I'm applying the proper amount, as there isn't any seeping.

My other issue is when I remove the denture. After prying it out of my mouth, I end up with 'strips' of the adhesive on the gum line, in the socket of one particular tooth and along the roof of my mouth. Any suggestions on the easiest way to remove it? This is, by far, the least appealing issue that I've had to deal with!

Am I doing something wrong? Is there a "Dentures for Dummies" manual that I should be reading? Any help would be greatly appreciated and worthy of my (new) smile!

There are lots of previous postings on this site about removing adhesive residue. You might want to look back through them.

My dentist does not recommend brushing my gums (due to concern about interfering with the healing of my gums or changing my gums in a way that affects the fit of my denture) but does recommend swabbing my gums with moist or wet cotton. That is a gentle and safe way to clean gums (as is rinsing with salt water).

I find the easiest ways to deal with denture adhesive residue are: (1) suck on a hard candy (especially, citrus fruit or peppermint) or a piece of fruit; or (2) drink a diet coke or something hot (like coffee and tea); or (3) rinse with hot water. They all dissolve the adhesive (or, sometimes, make it sufficiently gooey that it can be rolled off). You should also experiment and see if you can use less adhesive. That way, you will have less adhesive clean-up to do. Lastly, for the sake of the healing of your extraction site, try to place the adhesive so that it doesn't get on your extraction site.

I have not experienced an after taste. However, I do find that, as the adhesive dries out during the course of a day, it becomes uncomfortable and causes a feeling of pulling against my gums (and I really don't like the clean-up or not being able to eat in the middle of the night because it's too much trouble to do the adhesive and then clean up after it). So, I set a goal of being adhesive free and, with the help of a soft liner, and after I got through the initial phases of gum shrinking (which seemed to take forever), I have achieved that goal. You might want to discuss this with your dentist.

Even though you're new at this, I don't think you're doing anything wrong. Since the Fixodent isn't oozing, it sounds like you're using the correct amount. But since you mentioned residue in your mouth, go ahead and try using just a bit less. And to remove the residue, rinse your mouth with comfortably hot water and brush your gums with a soft-bristled toothbrush and toothpaste. Be sure not to pick the residue from your mouth - this could cause irritation.
