This was to be time for excitement. Hoping to have implants ( upper and lower molars) by December. The partials are horrid and I now have a bad feeling with the person I chose to plan my implant surgery. Will he give me copies of my CAT scan as well as the wax mold or am I going to have to hand out more money? This all hinges on the horrid partial. Doctor advertises himself as a Prosthodontist but I do not find any board certification for this. He does come highly recommended but I question him not using dental dams when he did the extraction. Am I being too obsessive? If there is lack of sterile technique with extraction I worry the implant pin is not given the best environment for success. Thanks for the ear. Crying in PA

I, too, think that you should get a second opinion (so that you can have some peace of mind). However, I note the following:
(i) I have always had my extractions done and implants placed by an oral surgeon after which my dentist has done the custom abutment and crown that create the "tooth" anchored by the implant (and, in this regard, I have six lower molars that are anchored by implants);
(ii) my oral surgeon has never used a dental dam during extractions or implant placement (and, to my knowledge, use of a dental dam in this connection is not standard practice) and I (and my implants) are just fine;
(iii) I believe that your dentist will (and is probably required by law and ethics) to give you copies of your CAT scan and other x-rays;
(iv) the wax mold to which you refer probably relates to your partials and, since the partials are done, it is of no use to you or any one else;
(v) it is entirely possible for you to have the balance of your dental work done by another professional after your implants have integrated with your bone (or, if your implants have not been placed yet, to have them placed by one professional and loaded by that same professional or another professional); and
(bi) partials (which I had a long time ago) are very hard to tolerate and the fact that you do not like your partials does not mean that your extractions or implants are or will be problematic.
Good luck (and calm down).

I'm Karen, the Fixodent Community Manager. I don't think you're being too obsessive. I understand this is a difficult time for you, and you need to be sure you've chosen the right dental professional for your situation.
You may have already seen my reply to your first message, but be sure to visit www.gotoapro.org. This is the website for the American College of Prosthodontists, and their site has a tool where you can locate board certified prosthodontists in your area. Here's a direct link: http://www.prosthodontics.org/abp/locate.asp.
I'm wishing the best for you.
