I need to vent, too

Posted: July 3, 2012 6:21 pm

Well, on Saturday when I went for my appt. I was handed a bag containing a full set of dentures. I got very emotional as I had paid for a partial for the bottom. I did not know what to do and my poor daughter hated to see me crying. No one there was able to explain what had happened to my partial. They just wanted to remove all of my remaining teeth. After many hours I decided to do it because by this time after crying so much I knew if I left I may never return and my teeth were paid for.  They made my daughter pay the bill for the extractions while I was in the cubicle before doing the work. I looked at the bill after we left and realized that they really over charged my daughter so I had her stop payment on it and faxed copies of all paperwork to my dental discount plan.

My upper teeth were not set in right and my two front teeth are off to the left side. So nothing is lined up and I look stupid. I am trying my best to recover but have totally lost my appetite and must force myself to eat because my blood sugar goes down and I get dizzy. Actually I feel pretty sick overall.

I am on pain medication but when I have to put the bottoms back in after rinsing the pain sends me through the roof.

I hope I can get the bill resolved, a new upper denture, and get used to all the changes.

I agree with you (and Karen) -- without a doubt, you are in a bad situation.

I know that it is hard (in fact, really hard), but you must remain calm and focussed.  I suggest the following:

1.  Try to eat or drink something or anything you can.  Start with a large size chocolate milkshake -- it's easy to get down, soothing and filling.  Have a baked potato with sour cream.  Drink lots of fluids.

2.  Although I realize that you paid for your teeth and may want to continue with the same dentist, I think you should have a consultation with another dentist experienced with dentures as soon as possible to determine what that dentist thinks needs to be done to remedy your situation.  Because it is totally unacceptable (and, perhaps, unethical) for you to have had all of your lower teeth extracted when the plan was for you to get a lower partial denture and for you to have been overcharged for the extractions, if you can afford it, you should switch to the new dentist and demand a full refund from the current dentist.  I think think that if you are firm and persistent, you will get the refund.  In any event, if you end up continuing with the current dentist, you will have gotten valuable information from the new dentist that you can put to use with the current dentist.

3.  Be patient with yourself as you adapt to the changes and keep telling yourself that you will be a successful denture wearer.  Remember, that time, practice and patience (as well as a decent dentist) will help you conquer your situation.

By the way, it is entirely possible that the issues with your upper denture can be resolved without making a new denture.  Instead, the dentist's lab may be able to reposition the teeth in your exising upper denture to make them line up properly.

Good luck (and let us know how you do).

Hi Suzanne, I'm Karen, the Fixodent Community Manager.  I hate to hear you had this experience.  If you haven't already, ask your dentist why a full extraction was performed on your lowers when you were expecting a partial, and request a detailed explanation of the charges.  More importantly, let your dentist know your front teeth aren't lined up properly.  It sounds like he should remake your upper denture.  If you're not satisfied with your dentist's plan to correct this, stand you ground until you're fully satisfied.  Be sure to keep in touch to let us know how this turns out.

I know you're in a lot of pain right now, but try not to get discouraged.  It will get better.

^Karen
