teeth modified by grinding some down?

Posted: July 12, 2012 5:06 pm

I just got my dentures this week, the acrylic kind.  When I came back a day later, for initial adjustments, I noted to the dentist that one side still had a gap between the contact area of the teeth on one side, albeit small and largely imperceptable to me.  He said he wanted the fit to be better, so he took out the dentures and began to grind away on the tops of several teeth that had 'high points'.  He said this was normal to do after I had questioned him about this.  Now, several teeth are partially flattened/distorted, and they feel unnatural to my tongue.  I would think that grinding on acrylic would damage it, or make it prone to further damage.

Has anyone else had this type of experience?

It is not at all unusual for the bite of dentures to be adjusted by modifying the denture teeth that are "high" and, therefore, skewing the bite of the dentures.  Depending upon the skill of the dentist (and the care taken by him or her to retain the correct shape of the teeth), the patient may not be aware of the changes.

I am pretty sure that you will become accustomed to the changes your dentist made to your teeth (after all, all of your teeth probably feel really strange and somewhat unnatural right now).  However, I am also sure that, if you ask your dentist to do so, he or she can make a few tweaks to make your teeth feel more natural.

By the way, denture teeth are not (and do not feel) as sharp or pointed as natural teeth.  You will get used to it (like the rest of us).

Good luck (and let us know how you do).

I'm Karen, the Fixodent Community Manager, and I hope you're doing well with your adjustment to dentures.  I can understand why you would question this procedure.  I recommend letting your dentist know several teeth feel unnatural since being ground down.  I'm wondering if your dentist can smooth and polish the ground areas to correct this.

If anyone else has gone through this, please reply and share your experience.  We'd love to hear from you!
