My Denture Journey Part 2- Questions!

Posted: July 18, 2012 1:06 am

I am going to the dentist tomorrow to have deep cleaning for the few teeth that I am keeping, and I wanted to compile a list of questions to ask the dentisist before my eday on Aug. 1st. Any suggestions will be helpful. Thanks!

Be sure to ask for your treatment plan in writing indicating all the costs and the services that are included for that fee. Also ask for the prices for various a la carte services. Some practices do not include adjustments and soft liners during the healing period. These are vital to having a good fit. Also ask for the anticipated time line for various things and what you can expect as far as being able to access the dentist when YOU feel you need to be seen. Learning to wear dentures will be unlike anything you have ever experienced so you need the dentists guidance- maintain a good working relationship.

The list of questions to which Karen directed you is a good one.  In addition, you might ask your dentist about taking antibiotics to prevent infection and things to do to reduce swelling.  Also, since dentists are not great at telling patients what dentures feel like (because they don't have dentures), your best source of information on that topic is the internet, including some of the older posts on this site.  Also, feel free to post more questions on this site.

Since you will have some teeth after your extractions (including some back teeth), it sounds like your dentures will be partial (rather than complete) dentures.  You should confirm, and discuss, this with your dentist.

Good luck (and let us know how your appointment goes).

I'm Karen, the Fixodent Community Manager, and it's good to hear from you again!  It's a great idea to ask your dentist questions ahead of time.  The New To Dentures page on this website features some questions to ask your dentist before and after getting dentures, and I hope you'll find them helpful.  I've included a direct link below.

Does anyone else have any questions to add to the list?

Thanks!
