trying to adjust to new dentures

Posted: January 19, 2010 3:29 pm

I had my back teeth removed a few months ago. On January 13, I had the front removed and "temporary immediate dentures were placed in.  I've kept my new "temporary immediate dentures" in day and night until last night,,,so that would be for 6 days i kept them in (except for ten minute intervals to rinse them).  The dentist told me to add pressure , i guess to have the gums form to these foreign objects and not shrink therefore not being able to use them . But , I don't know,,,it feels like i'm abusing my gums.  I haven't really even tried to chew with them,,,just eating stuff I can slither down my throat.  It's a  very odd feeling having this big plastic thing in my mouth.  I didn't have implants yet for the bottoms, but am supposed to have two implants in about 8-12 weeks.  Is it possible that the "flange" part of the lowers are too deep?kinda like pressing down into the bottom of my mouth  (the roof part ,,but of the bottom). Or is it just too soon to know if the fit is right because it is only one week?  I dread taking them out ,,LOVE  when they are out,,,,DREAD putting them back in.  Anybody else having this same question and feeling? Do I just need time? or Do i need to go to the dentist to see if there should be an adjustment.  Now if the dentist doesn't have a lab on site,,,,does she have to send it out? does she do it herself?  or do I need to go to the lab.  As to this site, I found it helpful as to the placement of the adhesive and its other suggestions. thanks  June

I had 14 pulled 7 days ago and my dentures put back in..I was in a lot of pain for a few days,,I went back this past tuesday for a checkup, he has to sand some of the top part of my dentures down cause it was causing sore on my gum...it still hurts to take them out but I truly belive it's cause the gum hasn't had time to heal all the way..Call your dentist and let him or her know what's going on.. they can do what ever you need done right in thier office at least mine did..I love my dentist..I can smile now without being ashame to open my mouth...

Hi Vicki,  I want to know how long it took you to get used to the full mouth feel?  I just got my upper dentures yesterday and I have bouts when i just dont think I can stand it..I am not sore or in any pain with is a blessing..The front feels good and they look beautiful..But this full feeling makes me feel hopless for some reason..My dentist made some adjustments and put the soft liner in and they are very snug...Eating is weird and it takes me a long time to eat...I just want to know how you are doing..Misery loves company and I just want to know if there is hope..Thanks Tanya

I know exactly what you mean. I have lived without teeth for about 5 years.  Finally on my birthday 4/15/10, I completed my appts. with a local Dental facility that does everything right there on-site. This was a great advantage. My uppers took about 3 weeks to not get anymore sore spots. I have never had to use adhesive on my uppers. The lowers, however, have been a real challenge. I have had them re-adjusted 4 times now. I have gagged several times, pills are a challenge to swallow ( hold your head up). The swollen tongue & neck have been a problem, relearning to talk & eat. I think one more adjustment & I'll be there.  I have to use Fixodent to be able to eat anything solid. I think tongue swelling comes from the inner part of the lower denture being too long or deep into the mouth. The tongue has to stretch too far to talk & after a whole day it's very painful. Eating smaller bites & alternating sides with your back teeth all helps. I even look at myself in the mirror when I eat to practice. Sounds funny, but it helps.

Good Luck To All & Happy Smiling!!!

I had all my uppers taken out April 14th, and I am going through the exact same thing. I mean I am sick of yogurt, smoothies, baby food and soy milk, somebody give me a cookie that I don't choke on. Hope it gets better for ya. Just wanted you to know, you are not alone. I am hoping that I will be able to get implants in 4 mos cause I sure hate dentures.Hate what I look like w/o uppers. I walk around the bedroom with my jammies pulled up over my mouth when I have the darn things "soaking". yuk - vicki

Hi, I too am trying to adjust to new dentures. Have had a week. After reading what you have been through I am ready to throw in the towel. lol I gag, I whistle when I talk, I'm afraid they will fall out when I'm talking and I agree, there is definitely a big thing in my mouth. However, I spoke to my dentist and mentioned your problem and he said, go back to your Dentist, or at least call and let him know what is going on. He may want to make an adjustment. Wish I could be more helpful. Heck, I wish I didn't have upper dentures - if wishes were ......vicki
