trying to adjust to new dentures

Posted: January 19, 2010 3:29 pm

I had my back teeth removed a few months ago. On January 13, I had the front removed and "temporary immediate dentures were placed in.  I've kept my new "temporary immediate dentures" in day and night until last night,,,so that would be for 6 days i kept them in (except for ten minute intervals to rinse them).  The dentist told me to add pressure , i guess to have the gums form to these foreign objects and not shrink therefore not being able to use them . But , I don't know,,,it feels like i'm abusing my gums.  I haven't really even tried to chew with them,,,just eating stuff I can slither down my throat.  It's a  very odd feeling having this big plastic thing in my mouth.  I didn't have implants yet for the bottoms, but am supposed to have two implants in about 8-12 weeks.  Is it possible that the "flange" part of the lowers are too deep?kinda like pressing down into the bottom of my mouth  (the roof part ,,but of the bottom). Or is it just too soon to know if the fit is right because it is only one week?  I dread taking them out ,,LOVE  when they are out,,,,DREAD putting them back in.  Anybody else having this same question and feeling? Do I just need time? or Do i need to go to the dentist to see if there should be an adjustment.  Now if the dentist doesn't have a lab on site,,,,does she have to send it out? does she do it herself?  or do I need to go to the lab.  As to this site, I found it helpful as to the placement of the adhesive and its other suggestions. thanks  June

LOL...that was the ONE thing I ate before my extractions....BIG MAC, SUPERSIZED FRIES and a DIET COKE!....LOL...I'm dying for another....

So I'm on Day 15 so far, today was the FIRST day I ate with NO pain....how?  Fixodent Food Control Adhesive....LOL....it made a big difference, although I'm also trying Cushion Grip in a bit too, just got it....but day by day gets better....I have been living off protein shakes and scrambled eggs....the one UPSIDE, the WEIGHT LOSS....LOL.....woo hoo!

I'll post how I make out with the combo of the Cushion Grip and Fixodent!

I know how you feel. I am very frustrated with the problems I am having with eating. I cannot get the hang of biting into a sandwich or even a slice of bread. My dentures seem to fit good and there are no sore spots. I just continue to struggle with chewing. I wish there was a support group for new denture wearers. I too want a hamburg!

I had all my uppers taken out April 14th, and I am going through the exact same thing. I mean I am sick of yogurt, smoothies, baby food and soy milk, somebody give me a cookie that I don't choke on. Hope it gets better for ya. Just wanted you to know, you are not alone. I am hoping that I will be able to get implants in 4 mos cause I sure hate dentures.Hate what I look like w/o uppers. I walk around the bedroom with my jammies pulled up over my mouth when I have the darn things "soaking". yuk - vicki
