eating with confidence

Author: The American College of Prosthodontists

Findings from the "Fixodent Beauty & Aging Survey" revealed roughly half of women say it would lessen their concerns, at the prospect of needing dentures, to know they could continue to eat the foods they love. Eating is a big part of our every day lives—we do it at least three times a day! And many times, eating is a social event which brings family and friends together in an intimate setting.

With that, you are probably wondering what you won't be able to eat now that you have dentures and how your dentures will stay in place while you are eating. The good news is you actually have nothing to worry about! You can still eat all the foods you've always enjoyed—apples and even corn on the cob—once you've gotten accustomed to your new dentures. To ensure this transition goes smoothly, there are steps you can take to help ensure you don't have any embarrassing denture slips at the dinner table.

While eating with your new dentures may be challenging at first, I've compiled a few tips to help you eat with ease and enjoy wearing your dentures:

  • Begin with small quantities of food cut into smaller pieces.
  • When you put food in your mouth, chew half of it on the back-left side of your mouth and the other half on the back-right side. This will even out the pressure on your dentures.
  • Start with soft foods, such as eggs, fish, cooked vegetables or old fashioned oatmeal. After you feel more confident, try eating chewier foods, such as fresh celery or broccoli, that tend to have a natural snap to them.

If when eating you find that food has lost its flavor, don't panic because this is only temporary. Right now, your mind is receiving strong signals from your mouth about your dentures, which overpower the messages from your taste buds. After you get accustomed to dentures, your mind will find a better balance and your sense of taste will improve. However, during this time, feel free to add fresh herbs to help heighten your senses and increase flavor.

Additionally, to help keep your dentures from slipping while you're enjoying your meal, I suggest trying a denture adhesive. Fixodent is one such adhesive and offers several easy-to-use varieties that give you a long, strong hold on your dentures. When used properly, it also helps you increase biting force while sealing out food particles that can irritate your gums.
